Mac OS versions 8.6 and earlier can open a maximum of 348 files simultaneously. It is not uncommon for users of Mac OS computers to encounter this limit. However, identifying all open files is normally extremely difficult.
About List Open Files
List Open Files was created to provide information that is helpful in managing open files. List Open Files displays a window which lists the names of all currently open files along with each file's location. The location of each file consists of the names of the disk and folder containing the file. Additionally, the owner is listed for each file. The owner was usually responsible for opening the file and can be the Mac OS, an extension, or an application such as SimpleText.
Some files may appear more than once in the list because it's possible for a file to be opened more than once. Quite a few files are disk directory files or invisible files and they won't be displayed in any Finder windows. More than likely you never knew they were there!
The files are listed in the order in which they were assigned open file slots. If you've just restarted your computer then the order is roughly the same as the order the files were opened.
You can print the list of open files and, when quitting, you will have the opportunity to save the list.
List Open Files was created as a courtesy by Alsoft, Inc. The entire interface is provided by the Simple Input/Output User eXchange (SIOUX) by Metrowerks, Inc.
Compatibility
List Open Files is compatible with all 68K Macintoshes and all Power Macintoshes running System 7 through Mac OS 8.6.
